How to Get Your Free Credit Reports and Build a Useful Review Routine

Start a credit-improvement plan with the information being reported about you. AnnualCreditReport.com is the authorized website for free reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. The FTC says free weekly online reports are available through this program.

Key takeaways

  • AnnualCreditReport.com is the only authorized site for free reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, now available weekly online.
  • A free report does not include a score and does not require buying monitoring.
  • Review one section at a time and turn findings into a short list of verified facts and next actions.

Reach the official service safely

Type the address yourself rather than following an unexpected text or sponsored offer. Free access to a report does not require purchasing credit monitoring. A report is the record of accounts and related information; a credit score is a calculation using information from a report. Do not assume the free report includes a score.

Review one section at a time

Record the bureau and report date. Check identifying information, accounts you recognize, account ownership, balances, limits, payment status and inquiries. Compare the same account across bureaus while allowing for different reporting dates. An old address alone is not proof of identity theft, and a recently paid balance may not yet reflect a new reporting cycle.

  • Mark the exact field that concerns you.
  • Record what you believe is correct and why.
  • Locate a statement or payment confirmation that supports it.
  • Keep a secure copy of the report and your notes.

Make the next step specific

For a hypothetical account showing a payment as late despite a dated confirmation, collect that confirmation and the relevant statement before disputing the payment status. For a correct high balance, work on an affordable repayment plan instead. Those are different tasks.

Schedule another review after a relevant update or dispute result. Checking your own report does not lower your score. Save sensitive documents in a protected location and redact unnecessary account details when sharing them with an adviser. Your useful output is a short list of verified facts and next actions, not a stack of unreviewed downloads.

Frequently asked questions

How often can I get a free credit report?

Free weekly online reports are available from all three bureaus through AnnualCreditReport.com. See the FTC’s free report guide.

Does checking my own credit report hurt my score?

No. Viewing your own report is a soft inquiry and has no effect on your score.

What should I look for on my credit report?

Personal details, accounts you don’t recognize, wrong balances or limits, incorrect late payments and unfamiliar inquiries. The CFPB lists common errors.
