Understand the choices—and the tradeoffs.
When debt becomes difficult to manage, it helps to look at the full picture. Repayment plans, nonprofit credit counseling, consolidation, and debt settlement are different approaches. Suitability depends on your circumstances, costs, and risks.
Before choosing a program
- Ask for a clear explanation of fees, eligibility, and obligations
- Compare alternatives rather than relying on a single advertised result
- Understand the possible effects on your credit and your finances
Debt settlement can result in additional fees and interest, damage to credit, collection activity, and possible tax consequences if debt is forgiven. It is different from credit counseling. Discuss the risks and alternatives before enrolling.
