Charged After Canceling a Subscription? Preserve the Confirmation and Check the Bill

Recurring-payment loop interrupted beside a saved cancellation confirmation.

A recurring card charge after cancellation needs a documented review. Start with the service’s terms, the cancellation confirmation and the actual charge date. An app deletion, a card replacement or a bank setting is not a reliable substitute for understanding the subscription agreement.

Key takeaways

  • Keep the cancellation confirmation, effective date and reference number — they are your strongest evidence.
  • Ask the merchant for a specific written resolution before escalating.
  • If charges continue, dispute them with your card issuer promptly; billing-error deadlines apply.

Match the cancellation to the right service

Record the merchant name, subscription account, cancellation request date, effective date and confirmation reference. Check whether the charge concerns an earlier billing period, a different account or a renewal you believe should have stopped. Preserve the original terms and correspondence.

Ask for a specific resolution

Contact the merchant through a verified channel, identify the disputed transaction and explain the cancellation evidence. Ask for written confirmation of what will be refunded or stopped. Do not send passwords or full financial credentials in an ordinary support message.

Escalate appropriately if charges continue

The FTC advises disputing unwanted charges with the card company when a business keeps charging after you canceled. Review the issuer’s process promptly. A qualifying billing-error notice has timing requirements; do not wait for several more statements while repeated charges accumulate.

  • Keep the cancellation confirmation.
  • Save each statement showing a disputed charge.
  • Record merchant and issuer contacts separately.
  • Continue reviewing subsequent statements.
  • Check that any promised refund actually posts.

In a hypothetical case, a merchant promises a refund but no credit appears on the next statement. Follow up using the reference and dates rather than assuming a promise is a completed transaction. Stopping a payment method does not necessarily terminate a contract or settle a valid obligation. Ask for clarification or qualified advice if the agreement itself is disputed.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I’m charged after canceling a subscription?

Contact the merchant with your cancellation confirmation and ask for a refund in writing. If that fails, the FTC advises disputing the charge with your card company.

Does replacing my card stop recurring charges?

Not reliably. Some merchants receive updated card details automatically, and a new card does not end the contract. Cancel with the merchant and keep proof.

How long do I have to dispute a recurring charge?

For a billing error, your written notice should reach the issuer within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge. Act early rather than waiting for more charges to pile up.
